21 resources created by 18 users

This Materials Science and Engineering Materials page on GoConqr gathers community-made flashcards, mind maps, quizzes and notes, from heat treatment of carbon steels and phase diagrams to composites, biomaterials and fatigue. It's built for university students and professional candidates, plus teachers after ready-made material, with school students mentioned only in passing. There are over 170 resources here, including more than 20 quizzes, more than 80 mind maps and over 40 flashcard decks. Pick a topic, try a quiz to find your gaps, then make your own set.

About Materials Science and Engineering Materials

GoConqr Original

What the unit covers

This unit collects study material on how engineering materials are built, tested and treated. The mind maps are the largest group. Mechanical Properties Of Materials sets out stress as force divided by cross-sectional area and splits it into types. Microstructure Constituents walks through austenite, martensite, bainite and pearlite. Heat Treatment of Carbon Steels covers annealing, normalising, hardening and tempering and the effect of each.

Where to start

Begin with the basics. The flashcard deck Engineering Materials Glossary and the deck Module 1: Introduction to Engineering Materials give you the vocabulary. Then open the mind map on mechanical properties, and the deck MEEN 360 Midterm Exam Study, which defines strength, stiffness, ductility, toughness and hardness.

Metals, heat and structure

Next, move to the metals. The deck Phase diagrams asks what a phase is and when a state is stable or metastable. The mind maps on ferrous alloys, cast irons, titanium alloys and aluminium alloys follow naturally. The notes on making the CCT diagram and the Jominy end-quench test suit readers who want a worked process. The deck A LEVEL PRODUCT DESIGN - HEAT TREATMENTS offers a shorter, simpler route into the same ideas.

Composites, biomaterials and failure

The composites deck covers glass reinforced plastic, carbon fibre and Kevlar. The Biomaterials (Introduction) mind map sorts implants into temporary, degradable and permanent. For failure, look at the maps on fatigue, creep and fatigue, and crack initiation and propagation.

Using quizzes and maps together

Read a mind map first, then take a quiz on the same topic, such as Carbon Steels and Alloy Steels or Physical Metallurgy Quiz 1. Note what you missed and go back to the map. This unit sits in the Engineering Materials strand of Mechanical engineering. When you are ready, build a flashcard deck of your own from the gaps you find.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with the Engineering Materials Glossary flashcards or the Module 1 introduction deck to get the terms straight. After that, the Mechanical Properties Of Materials mind map explains stress and the main property definitions, which later topics build on.

What do the mind maps cover?

They cover mechanical properties, microstructure constituents, heat treatment of carbon steels, ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, cast irons, composites, biomaterials, fatigue and creep. There are also maps on titanium alloys, aluminium alloys, superalloys and surface treatments.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr. A free account saves your quiz scores and lets you create your own quizzes, maps, flashcards and notes.

Who are these resources for?

Mostly university students and professional candidates, with teachers able to use the ready-made material in their own lessons. A small share suits school students, such as the deck on heat treatments written for Product Design.

Which quizzes can I try?

Options include Carbon Steels and Alloy Steels, Physical Metallurgy Quiz 1, Homogenous Nucleation and Steels - Eric Palmiere. Others cover bainitic steel and an introduction to TEM, so you can pick the topic you are working on.

What if my topic is missing?

Try a related mind map or flashcard deck first, as many topics overlap across heat treatment, microstructure and mechanical properties. If nothing fits, you can make your own set and keep it for revision.
