Question Answer
What was the cause of the Spanish Civil War? Since the existing constitutional monarchy was unable to provide effective government, the new right wing groups criticized the New republic, and sought out a military dictatorship to keep things in order. Riots broke out, and violence escalated.
What were the aims of Hitler's foreign policy? HIs main goals were to restore pride to Germany, and rise as a world power. To get there, he had to end his involvement in the treaty of Versailles so he could recover lost territory, build up his army, and form a union with Austria.
Why didn't Britain and France take a stand to Hitler when they had the chance? Britain relied on Germany for trade, so it was in their best interest to help Germany get stronger. They also believed that the Treaty of Versailles had been too harsh, and Hitler was only trying to rectify it. France was already in a tight position, and if they countered against Britain as well, they would be in a bad situation. France only joined Britain out of self-preservation.
How did Hitler succeed in his foreign policy aims? Hitler was cunning and had a plan laid out. First it seemed as though he only wanted the rights every other country had, but then made France look unreasonable. (Treaty of Versailles) Next, he caused rifts between Britain and France. HE then took his chances and tried to take Austria. Soon after, he signed the Rome-Berlin Axis and encouraged Mussolini to join him.
Why were both Hitler and Stalin willing to sign the Nazi-Soviet Pact even though they disliked and distrusted each other? Hitler was trying to attack Poland, but Stalin might not be happy about this, so he invited Stalin to join him and they would split what was gained. Stalin knew Hitler had no intention of honoring his promise, and that if fact, Hitler wanted to attack him. Stalin just needed more time to prepare, so he agreed to the Nazi-Soviet Pact to buy time.
Why were Hitler's Generals concerned about his foreign policy actions? Hitler was convinced that no one would oppose him if he attacked the USSR. HE thought Britain was weak, and that they would have preferred the threat of communism (USSR) was taken down as soon as possible. Hitler's Generals, on the other hand, were concerned he was getting to ahead of himself and would cause a two front war.
Hitler's aim was to start a war. How far do you agree? Hitlers aims were to gain land, and in the process, he knew it would involve war and was prepared for it. HE also knew that other countries would start to question each other, and he raised tensions in order for them to attack each other. This would make the other countries weaker, and Hitler would essentially rise to power.
Why did Italy and Germany change relationships throughout the 1030's? Mussolini saw that he and Hitler had similar views for what they wanted for their countries. Hitler knew Italy might get in the way of his plans to take Austria, so he formed alliances with him, and got him to join in the Spanish Civil War.
How was the conquest of Czechoslovakia different from Hitler's other foreign policy successes? Taking Czechoslovakian territory was not justified, and he could no longer claim he was only taking back his land.
The disunity of the Republican forces was the main reason why the nationalists were able to win the Spanish Civil War. Discuss. For: The republicans were disorganized, and had no military. Against: Franco had a lot of military power from Germany and Italy's forces, And they were well equipped. My judgement: Because Franco had so much power, it wasn't necessarily just the lack of power the republicans had, it was also the extreme power that the right wing groups had that influenced the war.
