Flashcards
chapter 6.1
Cards in this deck (21)
- 1Define elementsElements are substances that are made up of just one type of atom.
- 2what is atoms ?An atom is the smallest unit of ordinary matter that forms a chemical element.
- 3Define metallic elementsany of several chemical elements that are usually shiny solids that conduct heat or electricity and can be formed into sheets.
- 4define non-metallic elements ?a non-metal is a chemical element that mostly lacks the characteristics of a metal.
- 5define periodic table ?The periodic table, also known as the periodic table of elements, is a tabular display of the chemical elements, which are arranged by atomic number, electron configuration, and recurring chemical properties
- 6What does a molecular formula tell you about a molecule ?A molecular formula tells us how many atoms of each element make up the molecule.
- 7What are examples of molecular element ?calcium oxide , gold , glucose
- 8how many oxygen atoms are in each oxygen molecule ?Normal oxygen molecules have two oxygen atoms in them. There is another, less common kind of oxygen.
- 9give some examples of molecules made up of two atomsHydrogen, oxygen and chlorine
- 10give some examples of molecules made up of more than 2 atomsMolecules containing more than two atoms are termed polyatomic molecules, e.g., carbon dioxide and water.
- 11What is unique about about carbon ?Carbon has an exceptional ability to bind with a wide variety of other elements.
- 12What are crystal lattices ?A lattice is an ordered array of points describing the arrangement of particles that form a crystal.
- 13Which type of elements are more likely to form crystal lattices ?arrangement of atoms in a crystal. Each point represents one or more atoms in the actual crystal.
- 14What are metallic lattices ?So the positively charged kernels of metal atoms are arranged in a regular fashion surrounded by loosely held valence electrons. This arrangement is called a metallic lattice.
- 15Why can metals be bent and stretched into wires ?Each positive metal ion is attracted to the negatively charged delocalised electrons. Metals are malleable. This means that they can be hammered or pressed into different shapes without breaking.
- 16What are non metallic lattices ?In chemistry, a non-metal is a chemical element that mostly lacks the characteristics of a metal.
- 17What is an allotrope ?each of two or more different physical forms in which an element can exist.
- 18What are some physical properties of an element ?Melting and boiling point
- 19What are 3 ways that atoms can exist in elements ?1- As single atoms
2- In clusters of atoms called molecules
3 - In large grid - like structures called crystal lattices - 20What are monatomic elements and how many are there ?monatomic elements are rare with only six of the 98 naturally occurring elements being monatomic.
