Question Answer
What are the 7 PROPERTIES OF WATER that are important in Biology? 1. A good solvent 2. A polar molecules 3. A good lubricant 4. Has a high heat capacity 5. Has high heat of evaporation 6. High surface tension + capillary forces 7. Strong forces between water molecules
Water is a metabolite, what does this mean? This means water is a substance necessary for metabolic reactions. water is needed in 2 types of reactions : 1.Condensation 2. Hydrolysis
Water is a good solvent, why? Water can be known as the UNIVERSAL SOLVENT. water dissolves many types of substances. This is because of its composition and physical attributes. Waters polar arrangement allows it to be attracted to other molecules, it becomes so attracted that it can disrupt forces that hold compounds together and therefore dissolve it. e.g Salt
Why does water have a high heat capacity? Because of the extensive Hydrogen bonding between molecules.
Water has a high surface tension, why? The strong forces between other water molecules allows water to travel up tubes against the force of gravity. This property of water is used when transporting water in many trees.
