Question Answer
What term best describes a watery, jelly-like mixture? Cytoplasm
What does the Nucleus do? Controls all activities of the cell
What is Cell Membrane? The skin that holds the cell together. It controls what comes in and out of the cell
What does Vacuole do in animal cells? May contain wastes or chemicals that are being moved around the cell
Define Ribosomes Microscopic 'factories' that produce proteins used by the animal for growth and repair. They aren't considered true organelles because they aren't always enclosed in a membrane
What additional structures do plant cells have that animal cells don't? Cell wall, Chloroplast and a larger Vacuole
Is the Vacuole in a plant cell or animal cell larger? Plant cell
Define Chloroplasts Contain a green substance called chlorophyll and are found in the green parts of plants. Photosynthesis also takes place here
What process do plants use to make food? Photosynthesis
Define Photosynthesis A process where plants use energy from the Sun to chemically combine water and Carbon Dioxide from the air to make a sugar called glucose
Describe the Vacuole of a plant cell It's large and occupies most of the cell. It's filled with sap and stores water, wastes and nutrients
What lies outside the cell membrane and keeps the plant upright? Cell wall
Define Fungi Fungi (Fungus) are organisms that can be made of just a single cell or many cells
How does Fungi get food? They produce and release chemicals that digest the material they are growing on. They then absorb the digested material into their cells
What type of cell has the same organelles as an animal cell but with a cell wall? Fungi Cell
What are the building blocks of all living things? Cells
What are organelles? Other structures within a cell
What is a living thing that is only made up of one cell known as? Unicellular organism
Define Bacteria Small & simple cells that do not have any organelles or a true nucleus
What is the name of the group that Unicellualr organisms belong to? Protists
What is Mitosis? When a cell divides into two identical cells. First the nucleus divides into two and then the cytoplasm divides
