Craik and Lockhart (1972)_1

  1. LEVELS OF PROCESSING

  2. Aim

    • To see if the type of question asked about words will have an effect on the number of words recalled
  3. Method

    • Participants given a list of words to which they had to respond yes or no to
      • Some q's required structural processing of the words, others required phonetic and the rest required semantic
        • Then they were given a shorter list of words and asked to identify the words they had answered questions about
  4. Results

    • Participants identified 70% of the words that required semantic processing
      • 35% for phonetic processing
      • 15% for structural processing
  5. Conclusion

    • The deeper information is stored, the more likely it is to be remembered
  6. It does not explain why deeper levels of processing improve memory

    • Lacks ecological validity as we do not go around remembering lists of words everyday
      • We cannot apply it to real life situations
    • Evaluation
