Flashcards

Coding, Capacity and Duration of Memory

Grace Awoyemi Psychology AS level English 10 cards

Cards in this deck (10)

  1. 1CodingBaddeley - gave list of words to 4 groups
    acoustically (STM) similar and dissimilar
re-call immediately, tend to do worse with acoustically similar words
    semantically (LTM) similar and dissimilar
After 20 mins, tend to do worse with semantically similar words
  2. 2What is coding?Process of converting information from one form to another
  3. 3What is capacity?Amount of information that can be held in a memory store
  4. 4Capacity (Digit span)Jacobs developed technique to measure digit span.
Asked participants to recall digits in order, until they cannot recall correctly.
Found mean digit span for all participants was 9.3 items. Letters was 7.3.
  5. 5Capacity (Span of memory and chunking)Miller made observations of everyday practice. Noted things come in 7's *(e.g. days in a week, music scales, deadly sins). Suggested capacity of STM is 7+/-2 items. People can re call 5 words + letters, done by chunking.
  6. 6What is chunking?Grouping sets of digits or letters into units or chunks.
  7. 7Coding limitation (Evaluation)It was used quite artificial stimuli rather than meaningful material to participants. Means should be cautious about generalising the findings to different kinds of memory tasks.
  8. 8Digit span limitation (Evaluation)Conducted a long time ago. Often lacked adequate control. Some participants might have been distracted = might be invalid results because there were confounding variables that were not controlled.
Validity supported as co firmed In other research.
  9. 9Span of memory and chunking limitation (Evaluation)May have overestimated capacity of STM.
Cowan concluded capacity of STM was about 4 chunks. Suggests Miller's lower end of estimate (5 items) is more appropriate than 7.
