Big Idea - Interview prep. as an Authentic Assessment
- An Authentic Assessment is an academic assessment in which students apply their learnings to a task in order to demonstrate their mastery of content knowledge and skills. The tasks are performance-based, and often replicate challenges faced by adults in the real-world. The completion of the task is graded by using a rubric.
The Task
- The task in an Authentic Assessment allow students to perform, and apply their knowledge. They are similar to the problems frequently faced by adults. One example is a job interview. Adults need to have successful interviews in ordered to be considered for a position. In a Career Prep. class, students could participate in mock interviews in order to demonstrate their competence in this skill. The mock interview will not only show their level of comfortability with participating in an interview, it will provide the teacher with some insight into the students' ideas about this real-world task. The teacher can then adjust instruction and give feedback based on what they observe.
- The Lesson
- An Authentic Assessment drives the curriculum. That is, the assessment should be taught and practiced. In this lesson, students should be prepared for the questions that will be asked during an interview; they should be coached on avoiding negative answers and given tips about body language. At the time of the interview, the students' ability to perform the task as the class has practiced will demonstrate the students' mastery of the content.
- The Rubric
- The rubric is a grading scale that includes criteria for grading, and student performance. Some questions that should be asked when creating the rubric are: What should students know? What should they be able to do? What will indicate that the student meets this standard? What does good performance look like?
- Adjust Instruction
- Feedback is crucial for students' continued learning. The rubric will serve as an effective tool in helping students understand what they need to improve upon. This step also gives the teacher the opportunity to adjust instruction based on student needs. Some concepts may need to be re-covered, and some areas may deserve praise.
