Types of correlation

Positive correlation- as one thing goes up so does the other

Negative correlation- as one thing goes up the other goes down

Zero correlation- where there is no relationship between the co-variables

The difference between correlations and experiments.

In the experiment the researcher manipulates the independent variable to measure the dependent variable to see if the change of the IV would effect the DV. With correlation there isn't any cause and effect between one co-variable as other variables can still effect the correlation without the IV causing the DV.

Strengths

Useful prelim tool to look at strength and direction of the relationship between co-variables

Used as a starting point to look for patterns

Quick and economical to carry out

Limitations

can only tell us something is related not why they're related

It could be that another untested variable is causing the change (third variable problem)
