Flashcards
Module 2.2 Replicating cells

Cards in this deck (20)
- 1What is a zygote ?The cell formed by the fusion of two gametes.
- 2What is replication? The process of making copies of DNA.
- 3What is the first step of replication? The strands of the double helix separate from each other.
- 4Second stepNucleotides pair up with bases.
- 5Third stepResult is two indentical DNA molecules are formed.
- 6What are chromatids? One of the strands of a chromosome following replication.

- 7What is cell division? When cells divide or replicate when organisms grow.
- 8What are the two types of cell division?Mitosis and meiosis.
- 9What is mitosis? The cell division that produces two daughter cells identical to the parent cell.
- 10What is meiosis?Cell division that produces gametes with half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell.
- 11What are the stages of mitosis?Interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, cytokinesis.
- 12What is the diploid number? The number of chromosomes in body cells; two sets or 2n.
- 13What is the haploid number? The number of chromosomes in gametes.
- 14What are the situations in which cell division by mitosis will occur?Growth, asexual reproduction, tissue regeneration, tissue culture and engineering, wound and tissue repair.
- 15What is asexual reproduction? When offspring is produced without any union of gametes.
- 16What are examples of organisms that reproduce asexually?Candida, Volvox, Amoeba.
- 17What is interphase?Chromosomes replicate to have two chromatids.
- 18What is prophase?Replicated chromosomes and their chromatids become visible.
- 19What is metaphase?Replicated chromosomes line up along the equator of the cell.
- 20What is anaphase? The chromatids separate and move to opposite poles of the cell.
