About Derivatives

GoConqr Original

What the page covers

The resources here run from the basics to more advanced pricing. Early material introduces forwards, futures and margin, with mind maps such as Intro to Derivatives, Mechanics of Futures Markets and Forwards. Further along are options, swaps, exotic options and credit derivatives. Flashcard decks include Barrier Options, Black-Scholes and Interest rate swaps.

Where to start

Begin with a broad map. Derivatives Market and Introduction to Derivatives give you the vocabulary. Then move to Hedging Using Futures, and the mind map called Hedging, which sorts forward, futures and options contracts and separates long hedges from short hedges.

  1. Read an overview map for the key terms.
  2. Work through the futures material: pricing, margin and hedging.
  3. Move on to options, strategies and the Greeks.
  4. Finish with swaps, exotic options and credit derivatives.

Using quizzes and maps together

Read a map first, then test yourself. The quizzes Forward Contract, Valuation of Futures and Maintenance Margin and Open Interest check the early ideas. The chapter 3 quiz on a market index bought alongside a put asks you to work out a strategy's profit, while the chapter 6 quiz uses a table to estimate annualised lease rates on corn forwards. Where you slip, go back to the matching map and flashcards.

For exam candidates

Some resources mention IFM, CFA and FRM. Look at CFA L3 Derivatives and Private Markets, the IFM Flash Cards Set 10: Option Greeks deck and the FRM quiz. The flashcards on option trading strategies cover straddles, strangles, covered calls, protective puts and collars, which is handy for drilling payoffs.

Where this fits

This unit sits in the Financial Markets and Investments strand of Finance and banking. Teachers can pick maps or quizzes to share with a class. When you're ready, choose a topic and take a quiz.

Frequently asked questions

Which quiz should I try first?

Start with the Forward Contract quiz or Valuation of Futures if you are new to the topic. They test the core ideas before you meet options. If you are further along, the chapter 3 quiz on a market index and a put gives you a strategy to calculate.

What do the hedging mind maps cover?

The Hedging maps cover managing risk with derivatives. They set out contractual agreements such as forwards, futures and options, and they separate long hedges from short hedges. One also describes derivatives as securities that move with underlying assets. Hedging Using Futures goes deeper on futures.

Are there resources for professional exams?

Yes. The listed resources mention IFM, CFA and FRM. You will find CFA L3 Derivatives and Private Markets flashcards, IFM flashcard sets on forwards, calls, puts and option Greeks, and an FRM quiz. They were made by GoConqr users, so check them against your own syllabus.

Do I need an account to use these resources?

No. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take without an account. If you want to save quiz scores or make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes, a free account lets you do that.

Who made these resources?

They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. Over 100 contributors have added quizzes, maps, flashcards and notes. Because the style varies, it helps to compare a few resources on the same topic, such as the several maps on options.

What if I can't find a topic I need?

Try nearby topics first. Options material is split across pricing, strategies, Greeks and exotic options, and swaps appear in flashcards and notes. If something is still missing, you can build your own flashcards or mind map for it.
