Islamic History and the Seerah

What this unit covers

The unit follows the Seerah in order, starting before the Prophet (SAW) and moving through Makkah, Madinah and the years of the expeditions. Most of the resources are quizzes, with mind maps, a few notes and one flashcard deck, Seerah, alongside them.

Where to start

Begin with the background. The mind map Jahiliyyah sets out the religious situation in Arabia, including the Jewish communities who arrived there. The notes on the Sira of Muhammad explain why the Qur'an is hard to follow without the context that Hadith provide, and they separate the years in Makkah from the years after. The mind maps The Makkan Phase and Makkah 610-622 CE then give you the early period at a glance.

Following the story with quizzes

Once you have the outline, move on to the events in order:

1. Quiz on Hijrah asks about the guide who led the Prophet (SAW) and Abu Bakr (RA) on the journey.
2. The quiz The Mission of Dhat Al_ Salasil and The Conquest of Makkah covers the commander appointed and what led to the conquest.
3. The Battle of Hunayn and Taif asks why the Muslims suffered an early loss.
4. The Battle of Tabuk (Revision) includes a question on who received the most wealth from the spoils.

There are also quizzes on Badr, Uhud, the treaty of Hudaybiyah, the migration to Abyssinia and the letters to the rulers. Some are in Urdu-style transliteration, so scan the titles first.

Using maps and quizzes together

Read a mind map such as the treaty of hudaybiyah or The Battle of Hunayn first, then take the matching quiz without looking. Wrong answers show you which branch to go back to. Try the quiz again a few days later to see what stuck.

Where it fits

This unit sits in the Islam strand of Religion and theology. Teachers can set a quiz as a quick check after a lesson, and students can work through the weekly Seerat un Nabi quizzes in order. Choose one event, try its quiz and see how much you remember.
