- universal serial bus (USB) is a serial transmission method which was introduced to make many of the connections to a computer look the same. Nowadays USB is used in a wide variety of devices, such as mobile telephones, memory sticks and MP3 players. USB ports also supply power to some devices.
- The maximum theoretical transmission rate for USB 2.0 is 480 Mbps, but this is shared among all devices on a USB hub, so the rate for each device will be less than this.

- The web server is user by server-side processing to process the web page data. server-side processing is where the interactivity on a web page is processing on the web server. the code which makes this possible is a scripting language (web scripts).
- web scripts are included in the code of a web page and run when the page is loaded into the users browser. in server-side processing it does not matter which browser the user is using because the processing is done on the web server.
- an example is a form completed online which is filled in by the user then submitted to the server where the results are processed and stored.

- Bi-directional transmission has several meanings within data communication, but it is essentially about transmitting in both directions. Most recently the term has been
- applied to fi bre optics. Using the current technology, light passes in one direction only, so you have to add extra fibres to the bundle to carry a signal in the opposite direction.

- Packet switching is used for data sent across a network such as the internet. Data is prepared for transmission by being broken into packets with information such as source and destination and error checking. The packets are sent over the network separately and by different routes. They are then reassembled and checked at the other end.
- Advantages of packet switching is that it sends data efficiently,
- it allows efficient movement of data through a network because small packets can choose different routes through the network and there is also a security benefit because if a packet is intercepted, the hacker will only have one part of the whole file.
- Disadvantage of packet switching is if one or more packets are lost or corrupted during transmission, the whole file will not be received correctly.

- simplex is when signals go in one direction at a time. an example of this is a tv remote control.

- half duplex is when signals go in both directions to moniter and send instructions. they do not need to go at the same time. an example of this is a printer.

- full duplex is when signals go in both directions at the same time. an example of this is a mobile phone.
