About Anglo-Saxon and Norman England

GoConqr Original

What the resources cover

The unit follows England from the late Anglo-Saxon period through the Norman Conquest and its aftermath. Early material looks at who lived there and how it was run: the slide sets on Angles, Jutes and Saxons, the mind map Anglo Saxon Society - The King And The Earls, and the notes on Anglo-Saxon society pre-1066. These explain the powers of the king, such as law making, money and landownership.

The crisis of 1066

The flashcard deck The Norman Conquest 1066-1087 asks you to explain the succession crisis, William's claim, Harold's claim and why Harold fought at Stamford Bridge. The mind map The 3 Claimants to the Throne and the notes The Four Candidates fit neatly alongside it. There are many Battle of Hastings mind maps, flashcards and quizzes, plus a timeline flowchart.

Winning and holding control

After Hastings, the focus moves to control. The mind map 'Brutal Slaughter' How did William gain full control? 1067-71 walks through the reasons to rebel and the risings in the North and the East. The mind map Norman Castles - Military fortresses or Status symbols? looks at what was new about castles. The slide set Controlling the Church - William I and his sons covers the deposition of Archbishop Stigand. Later topics include The Domesday Book, Norman Law and the rule of William Rufus.

A sensible order

  1. Start with the mind map Anglo-Saxon and Norman England for the big picture.
  2. Work through the flashcards on 1066 and the claimants.
  3. Read a Battle of Hastings mind map, then take the Battle of Hastings Quiz.
  4. Move on to rebellions, castles and the Church.
  5. Finish with the Norman Conquest - Consequences quiz and one of the 16-marker practice quizzes.

Use maps to see how causes connect, then quizzes to check what stuck. Wrong answers show you which map to reopen.
