Bayesian Statistics and Decision Analysis

23 resources created by 19 users

This Bayesian Statistics and Decision Analysis page on GoConqr gathers community-made quizzes, mind maps, flashcards, notes and a flowchart, from decision tables and expected monetary value to Bayes' theorem, Markov models and MCMC. It's built for university students practising decision problems and probability reasoning, and for teachers after ready-made material. There are over 20 resources here, including more than 5 quizzes and over 5 mind maps, all at university level. Open a quiz to spot your gaps, then make your own study sets.

About Bayesian Statistics and Decision Analysis

GoConqr Original

What this unit covers

The resources follow two threads. One is decision analysis: decision alternatives, states of nature, payoffs, payoff tables and expected monetary value. The other is Bayesian thinking: Bayes' theorem, likelihood, prior and posterior ideas, and how Bayesian and null hypothesis testing differ.

Where to start

Begin with the mind map Topic 2. Its objectives cover the rational approach to decision making, satisficing, alternatives to both, calculating and interpreting probabilities, and building and analysing decision trees. It gives you the frame before the detail.

  1. Read the mind map Bayesian Theory of Decision for the vocabulary: event, experiment, consequence, a priori and a posteriori.
  2. Go through the Decision Theory flashcards, which cover aleatoric and epistemic uncertainty, Type I and Type II errors and risk analysis.
  3. Take the quiz Statistics Chapter 17, which tests the three components of a decision: event, act and outcome, along with EMV.
  4. Try the quiz Design w TP, a worked problem about choosing between five space shuttle propulsion designs by cost and chance of failure.

Using quizzes and maps together

Use a map to see how ideas connect, then a quiz to check you can apply them. If a question on expected value goes wrong, open the map Expected Value =?? and follow its accept-or-decline offer and purchase cases. The Midterm Flashcards help you recall payoff table structure and which decision criteria are non-probabilistic.

Going further

The Markov Models map compares semi-Markov models with simpler ones, and the MCMC map and the Bayesian Data analysis flashcards take you towards computational Bayesian work. The Module 4 Review quiz looks at decision tree models.

Where it fits

This unit sits in the Statistical Inference strand of Statistics and probability. Pick one resource that matches where you are today and work outwards from there, adding your own notes as you go.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with the mind map Topic 2. It sets out the objectives: the rational approach to decision making, satisficing, calculating and interpreting probabilities, and building decision trees. After that, the Bayesian Theory of Decision map adds the key vocabulary before you try the quizzes.

What do the quizzes test?

Statistics Chapter 17 covers the components of a decision and expected monetary value, including a property-buying example. Design w TP is a space shuttle design problem with costs and failure chances. Module 4 Review asks about decision tree models, so the set mixes calculation and concepts.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource on this page is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.

Which levels is this unit for?

The resources here are all university level. They suit university students working on decision analysis and Bayesian ideas, and teachers who want ready-made material to share or adapt for a class.

Is there anything on Bayes' theorem itself?

Yes. One flashcard deck, based on a chapter on Bayes and the probability of hypotheses, covers the formula, the likelihood principle and how Bayesian and null hypothesis testing differ. There is also a note on Bayesian Analysis (Inverse Probability).

What if the topic I need is missing?

You can build it yourself. Make a quiz, mind map, flashcard deck or note on the missing topic, using the listed resources as a model. The Decision Tree flowchart and the Profits maps show how others laid out similar problems.
