About Project Initiation and Planning

GoConqr Original

What this unit covers

This unit sits in the Project Management strand of Business administration and management (incl. project management). It follows a project from its first idea to a working plan. Most of what you will find is mind maps, with flashcard decks, notes, slide sets, flowcharts and a handful of quizzes alongside them.

Starting with initiation

Begin with the charter. The mind maps on developing the project charter cover the business case, agreements, organisational process assets and enterprise environmental factors. The mind map PMP - Develop Project Charter is a useful one for anyone aiming at that exam. The flashcard decks Initiating and Business case help you memorise the key terms. If you want a team angle, the note Team Charter is worth a look.

Moving into planning

Next, look at how a plan is built. The mind map Sab5#27 Details_Project_Mgmt_Plan explains that a project management plan is a set of plans and baselines, not just the schedule. The mind map for chapter 3 covers scope planning: what, when and how. For structure, try the flashcards on product and work breakdown structures, or the slide set Work Breakdown Structure.

Scheduling and estimating

The note Gantt Charts shows how a bar's position and length reflect start date, duration and end date. The flashcard deck Planning process group & Schedule Processes in it goes through schedule management. Then move on to Pert Chart, techniques for scheduling and the estimating maps, which cover times and costs.

Using quizzes and maps together

Read a map first, then test yourself. Process 4.1 Develop Project Charter Data Flow Knowledge Test fits neatly after the charter maps. Project+ 004 and Project Management Retake Preparation give broader practice across the whole unit. Note which questions you miss, go back to the matching map, and repeat.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I start on this page?

Start with the project charter maps if you are new to the topic, since a charter comes first in a project's life. Then move to the project management plan maps, the work breakdown structure flashcards and the Gantt Charts note. Finish with a quiz to see what has stuck.

What do the mind maps cover?

Most of the page is mind maps. They cover developing a project charter, business cases, the project management plan, scope planning, estimating times and costs, PERT charts and scheduling techniques. Some are lecture or chapter summaries, so wording varies from one contributor to another.

Are there quizzes for practice?

Yes. There are a few quizzes, including a knowledge test on the Develop Project Charter data flow, a university midterm quiz, a retake preparation quiz and Project+ 004. They are a good check after you have read the related maps or flashcards.

Which exams do these resources relate to?

The listed resources mention PMP, for example in the mind map on developing the project charter. The page is mainly used by university students and professional candidates, so many resources follow university course chapters or professional project management material.

Are the resources free, and who made them?

Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. A free account lets you save quiz scores and make your own maps, flashcards and notes.

What if I can't find what I need?

Try a neighbouring resource first. Charter, plan, scope and schedule material often overlap, so a related map or flashcard deck may cover your gap. If not, you can build your own notes, maps or flashcards and keep them for revision.
