About Strategic Management and Planning

GoConqr Original

What this unit covers

The unit brings together material on how organisations set direction and plan. Many of the mind maps follow the planning sequence. The 10 step Strategic Planning Process map runs from initiating and agreeing the process, through clarifying mission and values, to assessing the external and internal environment and identifying strategic issues.

Where to start

Begin with the basics. The maps What is strategy? and Introducing Strategy set out the idea of strategy, including Mintzberg's five Ps. Then move to the process maps, such as Strategic Management Process and Steps in strategic management.

  • Vision and mission: the map Vision and Mission Analysis and the quiz on vision and mission analysis in the Kapitel 05 set.
  • Analysis tools: The Five Competitive Forces That Shape Strategy, Resource Based View and 7S Model.
  • Choosing a strategy: Corporate Level Strategy and the map comparing Porter's generic strategies with Bowman's Strategy Clock.
  • Putting it into practice: Balanced Score-card and the map on politics, power and change in strategic change.

Using maps and quizzes together

Read a map first to see how the ideas link. Then take a quiz on the same topic. The quiz on strategic alliances, for example, asks you to name the forms cooperation can take. Any question you miss tells you which branch of the map to revisit.

Flashcards and notes

Flashcard decks such as Strategic Planning and Strategic position and dynamics suit short, repeated recall of key terms. Notes such as The Balanced Scorecard - created from Mind Map give a written version of a map. Professional candidates may spot revision material linked to CMA, while the wider set suits university courses.

Where it sits

This unit belongs to the Strategic Management strand of Business administration and management (incl. project management). Teachers can pick maps or quizzes to set alongside a lecture. Choose one resource that matches your current topic and make a start.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with a mind map such as What is strategy? or the 10 step Strategic Planning Process. They set out the basic ideas and the order of the planning steps, which makes later quizzes and flashcards easier to follow.

What do the mind maps cover?

There are more than 1,600 of them. They cover the nature of strategy, planning steps, vision and mission, the Five Forces, the Resource Based View, the 7S Model, the Balanced Score-card, corporate level strategy and strategic change.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself, so it is worth checking them against your own course materials.

Who are these resources for?

They are mostly aimed at university students and professional candidates, with a small share for professional study. Teachers can also use them as ready-made material. One listed resource mentions the CMA exam.

Can I make my own versions?

Yes. A free account saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes. That is useful if you want to rework a topic in your own words.

How many quizzes are there?

There are more than 90 quizzes on the page. They include topic sets such as strategic alliances, vision and mission analysis, types of strategies and the Five Forces, as well as general multiple-choice papers.
