About Innovation and Creativity

GoConqr Original

What the page covers

The unit sits in the Strategic Management strand of Business administration and management (incl. project management). Most of what you will find is mind maps, and they split into two themes: innovation and creativity.

On the innovation side, the map called Innovation links person, process, product, technology, push and pull, and the Wallas four steps. Typologies for innovation - L2 separates product from process innovation and looks at the degree of innovation. Innovation entry - L3 covers the liabilities of newness. Other maps cover open innovation, disruptive innovation, innovation strategy and organising innovation.

On the creativity side, CREATIVITY looks at mental models and techniques for seeing a problem from a different angle. Coorporate Creativity lists six elements, including self-initiated and unofficial activity. How to Kill Creativity (Amabile,1999) is a useful companion.

Where to start

  1. Open Innovation for the overall picture.
  2. Move to CREATIVITY and Coorporate Creativity.
  3. Read Typologies for innovation - L2 and Innovation entry - L3.
  4. Finish with Lead Users and user communities L10 and LS vs. DS approach, which compares Lean Startup with Design Thinking.

Using quizzes and maps together

Read a map first, then test yourself. The NPDP Exam Question Simulator quiz asks about the Miles and Snow strategies and about market research tools. Quizzes such as Open Innovation Quiz and Management of product innovation let you check one topic at a time. When an answer surprises you, go back to the matching map and read that branch again.

Flashcards and notes

Flashcard decks such as Innovation management, Brainstorming and Innovation Ecosystems suit short, repeated sessions. Some maps also have notes versions, such as the one for Lead Users, which are easier to skim. Teachers can pick a map or deck to use with a class.

Next step

Choose one map that matches your current topic, work through it, and then see how much you can recall in a quiz. Everything here was made by GoConqr users, so you may find several takes on the same idea.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with the mind map called Innovation. It brings together person, process, product, technology, push and pull, and the Wallas four steps. Once that feels familiar, move on to the CREATIVITY and Coorporate Creativity maps, then try a quiz to see what stuck.

What do the mind maps cover?

They cover innovation types, innovation entry and the liabilities of newness, lead users, open innovation, disruptive innovation and innovation strategy. On creativity, they look at mental models, corporate creativity and what kills creativity at work. There are over 600 maps, so several often cover the same topic.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users rather than by GoConqr itself, so it is worth comparing a few versions of a topic. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own material.

Who are these resources for?

They are mainly for university students, since almost all the material is at that level. Students can use the maps to revise theory, the flashcards for quick recall and the quizzes to test themselves. Teachers can pick ready-made maps, decks or quizzes to support their own teaching.

Are there quizzes on this page?

Yes, more than 20. Examples include the NPDP Exam Question Simulator, Management of product innovation, Open Innovation Quiz and a set of TIM quizzes. They suit checking one topic after reading the related mind map.

What if the topic I need is missing?

Try a nearby term, such as open innovation, disruptive innovation or brainstorming, because different users title similar material differently. You can also build your own mind map, flashcards or notes on the missing topic with a free account.
