About Antimicrobial Agents and Resistance

GoConqr Original

What this unit covers

The unit sits in the Infection and Disease strand of Microbiology and immunology. It brings together material on how antimicrobial drugs work and how microbes escape them. Much of it is about antibacterial drugs, but there are also resources on antivirals, such as the mind map on antiviral therapy for influenza, and on drugs aimed at eukaryotic pathogens.

Where to start

Begin with the big picture. The mind maps Antimicrobial Drugs and Antimicrobial Agents set out the goals of treatment, the need for specificity against the pathogen rather than normal microflora, and strategies for developing new agents. The flashcard deck Medical Microbiology asks what makes an ideal antibiotic and why new ones are needed.

Drug classes and targets

Next, move to mechanisms. The deck Antibiotics II: Inhibitors of Cell Wall Synthesis covers Gram-positive and Gram-negative differences, peptidoglycan structure and the steps of cell wall synthesis. The mind map ANTIBACTERIAL AGENTS looks at peptidoglycan as a target for beta-lactams and vancomycin. Chapter 20: Antimicrobial Drugs lists classes such as aminoglycosides, macrolides, penicillins and tetracyclines. There are also quizzes on protein synthesis inhibitors and nucleic acid synthesis inhibitors.

Resistance

Then turn to resistance. The quiz Antibiotics MCQs tests bactericidal and bacteriostatic drugs. A second quiz asks what causes antibiotic resistance, including how bacteria share genetic material. The deck S.aureus Resistance (And MRSA) and the mind map Mechanism of Resistance go deeper, while Lecture 12 Antimicrobial stewardship is a quiz on using drugs responsibly.

Using quizzes and maps together

  1. Read a mind map to see how the ideas connect.
  2. Take a quiz on the same topic and note what you missed.
  3. Go back to flashcards for those gaps.
  4. Retake the quiz after a break.

Teachers can pick a map or quiz to set alongside a lecture. Choose one resource today and see where it takes you.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Try the quiz Antibiotics MCQs to see what you already know about bactericidal and bacteriostatic drugs. If you would rather read first, the mind maps Antimicrobial Drugs and Antimicrobial Agents give an overview of goals, specificity and drug development before you move to classes and resistance.

What do the mind maps on this page cover?

They range from general overviews to specific topics. You will find maps on antibacterial targets such as peptidoglycan, mechanisms of resistance, classes of antibiotics, cephalosporin generations, teixobactin, MRSA and C.Difficile, and antiviral therapy for influenza. There is also a map on antimicrobials against eukaryotes.

Are these resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself, so styles and depth vary from one resource to the next.

Who are these resources suitable for?

Almost all of them are at university level, so they suit university students revising drug classes, mechanisms and resistance. Teachers can also use them as ready-made material, for example a quiz or mind map to accompany a lecture on antimicrobial therapy.

Can I save my quiz scores or make my own sets?

A free account lets you save your quiz scores and create your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes. That is handy if you want to turn the gaps a quiz reveals into a personal flashcard deck.

What if the topic I need is not listed?

Look through the related titles, as many cover topics under general names such as Antibiotics or Antimicrobials. If you still cannot find what you need, make your own mind map or flashcards on it and build the set you were looking for.
