About Infections by Body System

GoConqr Original

What this unit covers

The resources are organised by the part of the body an infection affects. The biggest cluster is respiratory: the Respiratory diseases mind map separates the upper and lower respiratory tract and notes that infections of the upper tract are most common. Alongside it you will find the Pneumonia quiz, the Bacterial Pneumonia mind map and several flashcard decks on respiratory infections.

Other systems are well represented too. There are gut resources on toxins, gastroenteritis, typhoid and cholera, plus skin, bone and joint, urinary, central nervous system and oral microflora sets.

Where to start

  1. Begin with a overview map such as Respiratory diseases, or the Pathogenesis mind map if you want the general picture first.
  2. Move to a system you are studying now, for example the Skin Infections quiz or the Medical Microbiology-UTIs quiz.
  3. Finish with a deck of flashcards to fix the key terms, such as Microbiology of the gut or Mechanisms of Microbial Disease.

Using quizzes and maps together

Read a mind map first and note the branches you can only half explain. Then take a quiz on the same system and see which questions catch you out. Go back to the map for those branches only. The PERTUSSIS map, for instance, covers early symptoms, outbreaks and why cases resurge, so a quiz afterwards shows whether those links have stuck.

The Gastrointestinal Infections: Toxins map lists C. Botulinum, S. aureus, B. cereus, C.perfringens and V. cholerae, which makes a handy checklist before a gut quiz. The STI's maps and the CONGENITAL INFECTIONS map work the same way for sexually transmitted and prenatal infections.

Where it sits

This unit belongs to the Infection and Disease strand of Microbiology and immunology. Teachers can use the maps and quizzes as ready-made material to share with a class.

When you are ready, choose one body system, try its quiz, and then make your own flashcards or map to fill what is missing.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

A good first step is the Respiratory diseases mind map, which sets out the upper and lower respiratory tract and why upper tract infections are the most common. After that, try the Pneumonia quiz or the Skin Infections quiz, depending on which system you are studying.

What do the mind maps cover?

There are over 70 mind maps across the body systems. They include maps on PERTUSSIS, STI's, CONGENITAL INFECTIONS, gastroenteritis, typhoid and cholera, cystitis, pneumonias and skin diseases, as well as broader maps on pathogenesis and the blood stream and lymphatic systems.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource on this page is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself, so it is worth checking them against your own course materials.

Who are these resources for?

They are mainly for university students who want to revise infections system by system or fill gaps in their knowledge. Teachers can also use the quizzes, maps and flashcards as ready-made material for classes.

Can I save my quiz scores or make my own sets?

A free account saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes. That is useful if you cannot find a topic here, such as a particular pathogen, and want to build a set of your own.

Are there flashcards on particular infections?

Yes. There are over 80 flashcard decks, including Syphilis, Chlamydia, Infections of the CNS, Bone and Joint infections, E. Coli as a UTI and Other UTI Agents. Others take wider topics such as Gut Microbiota & Immunity.
