About Microscopy, Staining and Laboratory Techniques
GoConqr OriginalWhat the resources cover
The page follows a typical microbiology lab course. Microscopy comes first: bright field, dark field, phase contrast, fluorescence and electron microscopes appear in the flashcards on microscopy and cell morphology, and in mind maps on microscopy techniques. Staining follows, with mind maps on Gram staining, differential stains and the Schaeffer-Fulton stain, plus notes on preparing a smear and simple stain.
Then come culture media and biochemical tests. Mind maps such as Types of Media and Agar sit alongside the Culture Media quiz, which asks which medium is most enriched and which dyes are used in Gram staining. Flashcards such as Micro Lab Quiz 8 cover blood hemolysis and phenylalanine deaminase.
Where to start
- Begin with a mind map such as Microscopy and Staining to see the whole picture.
- Move to flashcards like Lab 2 microscopes and simple staining and Lab 1 Aseptic Technique for the basic procedures.
- Try the Culture Media quiz and the Microbiology Lab Practical Staining quiz to test yourself.
- Finish with practical-style decks such as Lab Midterm Practical, which covers blood agar and bile esculin tests.
Using quizzes and maps together
Read a map first, then take a quiz on the same topic. Note the questions you miss and go back to the matching branch of the map. Flashcards then help you fix the details, such as media, indicators and expected results. Teachers can pick a quiz or map to set alongside a practical session.
Where this unit sits
This unit belongs to the Foundations of Microbiology strand in Microbiology and immunology. The lab skills here, seeing, staining and growing microorganisms, support the rest of the strand.
Choose a resource that matches your next practical and open it. When you are ready, build a set of your own.
Frequently asked questions
Which resource should I open first?
Start with a mind map such as Microscopy and Staining for an overview, then try the Culture Media quiz. If you prefer cards, Lab 2 microscopes and simple staining is a gentle way into the basic techniques before you move on to practical-style decks.
What do the mind maps cover?
They cover microscopy techniques, Gram staining, differential stains, the Schaeffer-Fulton stain, types of culture media, agar, biochemical tests and bacterial identification. Some also reach into cell culture topics, such as animal cell culture and cell lines, so you can see how lab methods connect.
Are these resources free to use?
Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. A free account saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.
Which levels are these resources for?
Almost all of them are university level, with a small share at other levels. They suit university students preparing for lab quizzes and practicals, and teachers who want ready-made material to share with a class.
Is there anything on lab practicals?
Yes. Flashcard decks such as Lab Midterm Practical, Microbiology Lab Practical and Lab Practicum 2: Exercise 9 cover identifying media, tests and organisms. Quizzes like Microbiology Lab Practical Organisms and Microbiology Lab Practical Microscopy let you check what you remember.
What if I cannot find the topic I need?
Try a nearby title, since staining, media and microscopy appear in quizzes, maps, notes and flashcards alike. You can also make your own quiz, mind map or flashcard set on the missing topic and use it for your own revision.
