About Parasitology

GoConqr Original

What this unit covers

The resources here follow the usual split of parasitology: protozoa, helminths and arthropods. Protozoa are well covered, with mind maps on Balantidium coli, Babesia spp., Giardia Lamblia and Entamoeba Coli, plus quizzes on Cryptosporidium and Trypanosoma cruzi. Malaria appears again and again, in mind maps, flashcards and a note on the Plasmodium vivax life cycle.

Worms and vectors

For helminths, look at the mind maps on nematodes, trematodes and cestodes, and the quiz Cestodes & Trematodes (Photos). The quiz on intro, trematodes and cestodes of the small intestine asks about definitive hosts, intermediate hosts and drug choice for Taenia solium. For arthropods, the flashcards on Ectoparasites and the mind maps on Arthropoda and Pediculosis are a good place to begin. The week 3 quiz asks you to identify features on the flea.

Where to start

  1. Open the mind map Parasitology or the Protozoa flashcards to get the overall picture.
  2. Move to a group you are studying, such as Malaria or Helminths.
  3. Try a quiz on that group. The Leishmaniasis quiz asks you to label the life cycle and name the clinical forms in humans and dogs.
  4. Finish with a mixed review such as Parasitology Full Review.

Using maps and quizzes together

Read a mind map first to see how a life cycle fits together: host, stage, site in the body and clinical signs. Then take a quiz without looking and note what you missed. Go back to the map for those points only. Flashcard decks such as Scientific Names and Parasitology Vocabulary help with terms you keep forgetting. Teachers can pick out ready-made quizzes and maps to share with a class.

Where it sits

This unit belongs to the strand Medically Important Microorganisms in Microbiology and immunology. Pick a resource that matches what you are studying now, or make your own set once you see what is missing.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

For a broad view, try the mind map called Parasitology or the Protozoa flashcards. If you already know your topic, go straight to a focused item such as the Leishmaniasis quiz, which asks you to label the life cycle, or the Malaria mind maps.

What do the mind maps cover?

They cover individual parasites and groups: Balantidium coli, Babesia spp., Giardia Lamblia, Entamoeba Coli, Schistosoma, Toxocara, and the nematodes, trematodes and cestodes. Others cover sleeping sickness, Chagas disease, malaria diagnosis and treatment, and pediculosis.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users rather than by GoConqr itself, so it is worth checking a resource against your own course notes.

Who are these resources for?

They are aimed at university students, who make up nearly all of the material, and at teachers looking for ready-made quizzes, maps and flashcards. Students use them to practise life cycles, identification, host terms and clinical signs.

Is there anything for lab or identification work?

Yes. There are flashcards called Parasitology (identification) and Parasitology - Practical, and photo quizzes such as Nematodes: Roundworms (photos) and Tapeworm Fluke & Amoeba Models. They suit practising what you see under the microscope or on a model.

What if I can't find a topic I need?

Try a related mind map or note first, as many parasites are covered inside group-level resources. If it is still missing, a free account lets you save quiz scores and make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.
