About Bioinformatics and Health Informatics

GoConqr Original

What this unit covers

The unit has two sides. One is bioinformatics: the biology of sequences, databases and analysis tools. The other is health informatics: standards, data reuse and decision support.

Bioinformatics resources

The Bioinformatics mind map lists alignment, next generation sequencing, phylogeny, clustering, HMMs, Gibb's sampling, biological networks and Gillespie. Pairwise alignment and RNA folding sit under alignment. The Genome Variations mind map looks at exon finding, whole-genome alignment and disease variation analysis.

  • Bioinformatics- The Basics flashcards cover aims, uses and primary databases.
  • Bioinformatics- Genomes flashcards cover Ensembl terms such as consensus genes and the CCDS tag.
  • BLAST flashcards separate BLAST N, BLAST P, PSIBLAST, BLASTX, TBLASTN and TBLASTX.

Health informatics resources

The Data Reuse flashcards ask what clinical data is used for, what a registry is, and how analytics differs from business intelligence. The two HINF 266 decks on learning outcomes cover how ISO defines standards, the four categories of standards in health information, and three ways HL7 describes interoperability. The note on methods for decision support compares symptoms with diseases. There are also mind maps on HL7 and on FHIR capabilities for research.

A sensible order

  1. Start with a mind map to see the whole topic.
  2. Work through the matching flashcards, such as BLAST or Data Reuse.
  3. Take a quiz, such as Data Analysis on pairwise alignment, or PSI-BLAST.
  4. Go back to the map and note what you missed.

Where it sits

This unit belongs to the strand Information Systems and Applications, within Databases and data science. Some resources are in Spanish or Portuguese, so you may find a few in another language. Pick a map or a quiz and begin, then build your own flashcards for the gaps.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with the Bioinformatics mind map if you want an overview of alignment, sequencing, phylogeny and networks. If your focus is health data, begin with the Data Reuse flashcards. Then test yourself with the Data Analysis quiz or the PSI-BLAST quiz.

What do the mind maps cover?

The maps range across sequence alignment, next generation sequencing, genome variations, protein classification and biological databases. On the health side there are maps on HL7 and on FHIR capabilities for research, plus one on scientific gateways. Use them to plan your revision before the details.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.

Who is this page for?

It suits university students and professional candidates who want to practise alignment, databases, standards and health data topics. Teachers can also use the ready-made quizzes, flashcards and maps. Most of the material is at university level, with a smaller share aimed at professionals.

Which quizzes can I try?

There are more than 9 quizzes. Examples include Data Analysis on pairwise alignment, PSI-BLAST, a GWAS databases quiz and Test Your Knowledge of Coding in Biology. Try one before you revise to see which topics need attention.

What if I cannot find a topic?

Look through the maps and flashcard decks first, as many topics are covered inside them. If something is still missing, you can make your own notes, flashcards or quiz with a free account and keep them alongside the community resources.
