About Clothes, Shopping and Money

GoConqr Original

What this unit covers

The page sits in the Topic Vocabulary strand of English language. It brings together three themes: clothes, shopping and money. Resources come from many classrooms, so you will see different course styles side by side.

  • Clothes: the mind map THINGS YOU WEAR lists items such as cardigan, coat, dress, jeans, skirt and tracksuit, plus footwear such as boots, flip-flops and sandals.
  • Shopping: the Shopping vocabulary flashcards include to pay, receipt, cashier, basket, customer, sale or discount and fitting rooms.
  • Money: the quiz Topic: Money asks you to choose verbs such as lend, borrow and give away in sentences.

Where to start

Begin with the basics. Open the Clothes flashcards, which run from boots, a cap and a coat to a scarf, trainers, gloves and mittens. Then look at the mind map THINGS YOU WEAR to see the words grouped together.

Next, move to shopping. The Shopping vocabulary deck gives you the words you need in a shop. Unit 5 Clothes is a mind map with useful sentence patterns: What are you wearing? I'm wearing... Are you wearing...? It also adds style words such as fancy, plain and colourful.

Using quizzes and maps together

Read a mind map first, then cover it and try a quiz. The quiz Clothes image dropdown asks you to name the clothing item marked in a picture, which is a good check of what you remember. For money, Spender or Saver Phrases tests phrases such as spending money on something and borrowing money.

  1. Read a map or flip through a deck.
  2. Take a quiz without looking.
  3. Note the words you missed and go back to the deck.

Teachers and next steps

Teachers can use the slide sets, such as Going shopping, to start a lesson, then set a quiz as practice. Some resources include other languages, so check a title before you share it. When you are ready, make your own flashcards for the words that give you trouble.
