About Phrasal Verbs
GoConqr OriginalWhat this unit covers
The resources here are grouped around phrasal verbs in English. Many are built around one base verb, such as get, look, give, take, run or keep. Others are built around a particle, such as up, down, on, in and into. Some follow a theme, such as work, travel, fashion, feelings and emotions, or science.
Where to start
Begin with the idea of how phrasal verbs behave. The Separable and inseparable phrasal verbs quiz asks questions such as whether turn down is separable, and the flowchart TYPES OF PHRASAL VERBS gives you the structure. The SEPARABLE PHRASAL VERBS deck is a useful follow-up.
Next, choose a theme. The Science Phrasal Verbs deck covers break down, carry out, find out, give off and work out. The mind map B2 Phrasal verbs for work groups verbs by the preposition that follows, such as deal with, rely on and set up.
Using quizzes and maps together
- Read a mind map on one verb, for example the maps called GET or LOOK.
- Go through a matching flashcard deck, such as Phrasal Verbs with Look.
- Take a quiz on the same verb, such as PHRASAL VERBS: GET, and note which gaps you missed.
- Go back to the map for those verbs only.
Quizzes like Three-word phrasal verbs (3) use gap-fill sentences, so you have to choose the right particle from context.
Exam practice
Some resources mention exams. You will find items for FCE, B2 First, CAE, IELTS and TOEFL, including FCE Phrasal Verbs True or False Quiz and Phrasal Verbs on the TOEFL. Teachers can use these as ready-made practice or warm-up tasks.
Where it fits
This unit sits in the strand Grammar: Verbs and Tenses, within the English language subject. It works well beside your other verb and tense revision.
Choose one verb or particle today, open its map and then test yourself with a quiz.
Frequently asked questions
Which resource should I start with?
Start with the Separable and inseparable phrasal verbs quiz, which checks whether you know how verbs such as turn down and get over behave. Then look at the flowchart on types of phrasal verbs. After that, pick a verb you use often, such as get or look, and work through its map and deck.
What do the mind maps cover?
There are over 500 mind maps. Many focus on one verb, such as get, give, look, take, run, keep, hold or make, and show the particles that go with it. Others cover themes, including B2 Phrasal verbs for work and a travel map, or sort verbs by structure.
Are the resources free to use?
Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes. The resources were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself.
Which exams do these resources suit?
Some resources mention FCE, B2 First, CAE, IELTS and TOEFL, for example a deck of phrasal verbs for First Certificate and a quiz on phrasal verbs on the TOEFL. Most of the content is aimed at school students, so check each resource's level before you use it.
Can I practise three-word phrasal verbs?
Yes. There are quizzes called Three-word phrasal verbs (2) and Three-word phrasal verbs (3), a transitive three-word quiz, a Three-word Phrasal Verbs deck and a slide set on three-part phrasal verbs. The gap-fill sentences help you spot which particles belong together.
What if I cannot find the verb I need?
Try searching by the base verb or by the particle, since many resources are organised that way. If nothing fits, make your own flashcards or mind map for that verb. Teachers can also build a short quiz for their class from the examples they already use.
