Geometric Transformations

25 resources created by 19 users

This Geometric Transformations page on GoConqr gathers community-made quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes on reflection, translation, rotation and dilation, plus rigid transformations and enlargements. It's built for school students revising the topic and teachers after ready-made material. There are over 90 resources here, including more than 20 quizzes, over 30 mind maps and 30 flashcards, almost all pitched at secondary level and some mentioning GCSE Maths. Pick a mind map to get the big picture, then try a quiz to find your gaps.

About Geometric Transformations

GoConqr Original

What this unit covers

The resources here follow the main transformations of a shape: translation, reflection, rotation and dilation (also called enlargement). Several mind maps treat the first three as rigid transformations, where the shape keeps its size. Others focus on enlargements, composite transformations and further reflections and rotations.

Where to start

Begin with the Transformations mind map. It lists reflection, translation, dilation and rotation, and defines translation as moving something from one place to another. Then open the Rigid Transformations mind map, which explains that in a rotation the distance from the centre to any point stays the same.

Next, move to flashcards. The deck called Rigid Transformation: Reflection Review covers reflecting across the x-axis, the y-axis, y=x, y=-x and lines such as x=number.

Using quizzes and maps together

Quizzes work best once you have read a map. Here is a sensible order:

  1. Take the Pre-Test on Transformation to see what you already know.
  2. Practise one type at a time with the quizzes Reflections, Translations, Rotations and Dilations.
  3. Use the quiz Dilation with scale factor to check what happens when a scale factor is greater than 1.
  4. Finish with the Transformation quiz, or the Unit 1 test on transformations in the coordinate plane.

If an answer surprises you, go back to the matching map and read that branch again.

Where it fits

This unit sits in the Geometry, Measurement and Trigonometry strand of Mathematics. It is mostly secondary material, and some resources mention GCSE Maths. Teachers can use the maps and quizzes as ready-made starters or revision tasks.

Next step

Choose one transformation, read its map, then test yourself with a quiz. Come back to the flashcards when you want a quick refresher.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with the Transformations mind map. It sets out reflection, translation, dilation and rotation in one place, so you can see how the ideas relate. After that, try the Rigid Transformations mind map, then a pre-test quiz to see which transformation needs more practice.

What do the quizzes on this page cover?

There are quizzes on reflections, translations, rotations and dilations, plus pre-tests and bonus quizzes for each. The Dilation with scale factor quiz asks about enlarging and reducing figures. Another quiz asks how coordinates change when an image is reflected across the y-axis.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself, so you will see different styles and levels of detail from one resource to the next.

Which levels and exams do these resources suit?

Nearly all of them are pitched at secondary level, so they suit school students and their teachers. Some of the listed resources mention GCSE Maths. Check the title and excerpt of each one to see whether it matches the topic you are revising.

Is there anything on enlargements?

Yes. The mind maps Transformations and enlargements and ENLARGING SHAPES cover enlargements, and there are quizzes and flashcards on dilation and enlargement as well. They are a good fit if you want to practise scale factors and resizing shapes.

What if I cannot find what I need?

Look at the other formats first, since a topic missing as a quiz may appear as a mind map or flashcard deck. You can also make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes with a free account, which also saves your quiz scores.
