About North America

GoConqr Original

What this unit covers

The page sits in the Regional Geography strand of Geography. Most of it looks at Canada, with a good share on the United States. Canadian material runs from physical geography and landforms to population, resources and identity. US material is mostly place knowledge: states, capitals and regions.

Where to start

Begin with the quiz Unit 2 of Geography, which checks the seven landform regions of Canada: the Western Cordillera, Innuitian Mountains, Great Lakes-St. Lawerence Lowlands, Interior Plains, Appalachians, Canadian Shield and Hudson Bay lowlands. Then try Geography Unit 1: Canada's Physical Geography, a fill-in-the-blank quiz on the geological eras in order, starting with the Precambrian.

If you are working towards CGC1D, the deck called CGC!D Exam Review and the mind map CGC 1D/P Geography Mind Map are worth a look.

Using maps and quizzes together

The mind maps give you the big picture. Canada's Diversity links the physical environment, managing resources, population study, soil, climate and landforms. Natural Resources in Canada notes where agriculture and fossil fuels are found across the provinces and territories. Canadian Identities covers symbols, cultural groups and languages. There are many more maps on Canadian Identity, so compare a few and see which layout suits you.

A simple routine works well:

  1. Read a mind map slowly and cover up the branches.
  2. Take a related quiz, such as Canada on the World Stage, to test what stuck.
  3. Go back to the branches you missed.

United States and place knowledge

For the US, start with the mind map The United States of America, which collects general facts such as area, population density and the biggest states. Then practise locations with Midwest and Southwest United States, where you drag or type each state's name. Flashcard decks such as The 50 States of the USA and their Capital Cities suit short, repeated sessions.

Over to you

Choose one quiz today, note what you got wrong, and then build a mind map or flashcard deck of your own for those gaps. Teachers can pick whole sets to share with a class.

Frequently asked questions

Which quiz should I try first?

Start with Unit 2 of Geography, which checks the seven landform regions of Canada. It is a quick way to see what you already know. After that, move to Geography Unit 1: Canada's Physical Geography, which asks you to put the geological eras in order.

What do the mind maps on this page cover?

Many cover Canada: Canadian Identity in several versions, Canada's Diversity, Natural Resources in Canada, Alberta Oil Sands and regions such as the Boreal Shield. Others look at the United States, including The United States of America, Megalopolis and Manhattan.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. If you want to save quiz scores or make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes, you can sign up for a free account.

Is there anything for exam revision?

Some resources mention CGC1D, the Canadian geography course code, such as the CGC!D Exam Review flashcards and the CGC 1D/P Geography Mind Map. Other decks and quizzes are labelled as unit tests or exam reviews. Check each one's content against your own course.

Can I learn US states and capitals here?

Yes. There are decks such as The 50 States of the USA and their Capital Cities and State Capitals, plus quizzes like United States Capitals and Northeast States Quiz. Midwest and Southwest United States lets you drag or type each state's name onto the map.

What if the topic I need is missing?

Look through the related quizzes, maps and decks first, since titles vary a lot. If nothing fits, make your own. With a free account you can create quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes for exactly the topic your class is studying.
