About Prepositions

GoConqr Original

What this unit covers

Most resources here deal with time and place. The mind maps Prepositions: in, on, at and Prepositions in time expressions sort out at 11.20, at midnight, at the weekend, at Christmas, and how in and on differ. The map Prepositions of place covers at for a specific point, an exact address or an event such as a party.

Beyond that, you will find movement and direction, dependent prepositions, verb + preposition sets, and the pair as and like. A few items are in other languages or come from school exams, so check each one before you use it.

Where to start

  1. Open a mind map such as Prepositions: in, on, at to see the basic pattern.
  2. Flick through a flashcard deck like Review of Prepositions, which shows under, in, inside, between and on top of with simple ball examples.
  3. Take Prepositions of time or Prepositions of place Practice to test what stuck.

Common mistakes and tougher practice

The slide set To vs FOR presentation tackles a classic slip: saying "for improve" instead of "to improve". For more challenge, the quiz Prepositional Phrases A-H. Exercise 2. Destination B1 uses gap-fills such as by accident and in addition to. Some resources mention FCE or B2 First, so they suit learners aiming at that level.

Using quizzes and maps together

Read a map, then take a quiz on the same topic. Note every wrong answer and find its rule on the map. Later, turn those rules into your own flashcards. Teachers can pick a map for explaining and a quiz for a quick check in class.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with the mind map Prepositions: in, on, at, which sets out time and position uses with clear examples. Then try the quiz Prepositions of time or Prepositions of place Practice. Beginners may like the flashcard deck Review of Prepositions, which uses simple ball-and-box sentences.

What do the mind maps cover?

They cover prepositions of time, place and movement, plus in, on and at comparisons. Others look at types of prepositions, the difference between as and like, and the difference between of and from. There are over 500 mind maps, so you can compare several explanations of the same point.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource on this page is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.

Which levels and exams do they suit?

Most resources are at secondary level, with a small share for younger pupils. Some mention FCE or B2 First, and one quiz is labelled B1. Others are simple classroom practice, so look at each title and excerpt to judge whether it matches your level.

Is there help with to and for?

Yes. The slide set To vs FOR presentation explains the difference between the two, with a typical error and its correction: say I'm studying every day to improve my English, not for improve. It is a handy short read before you attempt a quiz.

What if I can't find my topic?

Try a nearby topic first, such as dependent prepositions, verb + preposition decks or prepositions of movement. Teachers and students can also make their own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes to fill any gap, since everything here was created by the community.
