About The Reformation

GoConqr Original

What the resources cover

The Reformation unit follows the story from the church before the split to the Catholic response. The mind map The Reformation sets out the causes: Martin Luther, abuses in the church, the Renaissance and the printing press. Other maps look at Humanism, the Church before the Reformation and the main causes.

Luther has the most attention. You will find the mind map Martin Luther, which covers his life as an Augustinian monk, justification by faith alone and abuses such as simony, nepotism and pluralism. There is also a map on his three pamphlets of 1520 to 1521 and the case against him in Rome.

Beyond Luther

Several maps move on to Calvin, Calvin's Geneva before and after 1555, the Radical Reformation and the Anabaptists. For England, try The English Reformation, which explains how political considerations led Henry VIII to change his position, plus the map on the dissolution of the monasteries.

For the Catholic side, The Council of Trent covers its aims and why it was a turning point. Inquisition and Index explains the church court set up to prosecute heretics.

Where to start and how to combine them

  1. Begin with the mind map The Reformation for the big picture.
  2. Move to a Martin Luther map, then to Calvin and the Radical Reformation.
  3. Finish with the Council of Trent and the Inquisition and Index map.

After each map, take a quiz. Reformation Quiz tests ideas such as Humanism and Erasmus, while Reformation Practice Quiz II asks you to place famous quotations, including Luther's "Here I stand". Wrong answers show you which map to reopen.

The flashcard decks, such as Reformation key terms, help with vocabulary and dates. Some resources mention GCSE History, A-level History and AP European History, so check the title to see which suits your course.
