About Tools, Workshop Practice and Safety

GoConqr Original

What this unit covers

This unit sits in the Making and Manufacturing strand of Engineering and technology (general or other). It splits into two broad themes: knowing your tools, and staying safe while you use them. The resources were made by GoConqr users, so the style and depth vary from one to the next.

Tools

The tool material is mostly mind maps and flashcards. The mind map called Tools groups power tools such as the impact drill, jigsaw, circular saw, lathe and angle grinder, with accessories alongside. The Wasting Tools map breaks down saws, planes and chisels, from coping and tenon saws to jack, smoothing and block planes. The Hand Tools Vocab deck gives plain definitions, such as the adjustable wrench used for turning nuts and bolts. You will also find decks called Non Powered Hand Tools and POWER TOOLS, plus notes on screwdrivers.

Safety

Several mind maps share the same safety skeleton: the Health and Safety Executive, formed in 1974, risk assessment, signs, the fire triangle of oxygen, fuel and heat, and fire extinguishers. Reading two or three of them side by side helps you spot what every author thought was essential. The Safety Signs deck covers glassware, flammable, hot surface, bio-hazard, toxic and corrosive symbols.

A sensible study order

  1. Start with the Tools mind map to get the overall picture.
  2. Work through Hand Tools Vocab, then the flashcards on power tools.
  3. Read one of the Safety mind maps.
  4. Test yourself with the quiz Technology: Safety symbols, then Shop Safety Quiz.

Use a map first to see the structure, then a quiz to find what did not stick. Go back to the map for any question you missed. Exam candidates may spot links to GCSE Design and Technology in some of the material.

Over to you

Open a quiz now, see how you get on, then choose the map or deck that fills the gap. If you want something that is not listed, you can build your own.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with the Tools mind map for an overview of power tools, hand tools and accessories. Then try the quiz Technology: Safety symbols to check you can recognise hazard signs. Both are quick to get through and show you quickly which areas need more attention.

What do the safety mind maps cover?

Several of them follow a similar outline: the Health and Safety Executive and its role, risk assessment, signs, standard procedures and fire safety. The fire material includes the fire triangle of oxygen, fuel and heat, and the extinguisher types such as water, powder and CO2.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users rather than by GoConqr itself, so it is worth comparing a few on the same topic.

Which levels and exams do they suit?

Most of the material is aimed at secondary school students, with a smaller share for professional candidates and a little general content. Some resources mention GCSE Design and Technology. University students can use the maps and decks to refresh basics.

Is there anything on hand tool names?

Yes. Hand Tools Vocab defines tools such as the adjustable wrench, and other decks include Files and Chisels, Hand Tool Identification and Non Powered Hand Tools. The Wasting Tools mind map also sorts saws, planes and chisels into types.

What if a topic I need is missing?

Try a nearby resource first, as many maps and decks overlap. If the gap remains, a free account lets you save quiz scores and make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes for that topic.
