About Advertising

GoConqr Original

What the resources cover

This unit looks at how adverts are made, placed and judged. Many resources are about persuasion. The quiz Persuasive Techniques in Advertising asks which technique a line uses, such as the claim that 10 million people have tried a product. Secrets from the Science of Persuasion looks at the shortcuts people use to influence decisions, including reciprocity.

Others focus on media. Lecture 7: Media Planning separates scheduling decisions (how long and how often to advertise) from selection decisions (where to advertise). Week 8: Broadcast Media/Print Media/Support Media compares radio, TV and print.

Where to start

  1. Begin with the mind map Methods of Advertising for a quick overview of channels such as radio, newspapers, magazines, billboards and word of mouth.
  2. Try Persuasive Techniques in Advertising to test how well you can name what you see.
  3. Move on to Lecture 7: Media Planning once the channels make sense.
  4. Use the Advertising slogan flash cards to link well-known lines to brands.

Using quizzes and maps together

Read a mind map first to see how ideas connect, such as Message Strategies, Creative Strategies or The Language of Advertising Claims. Then take a quiz on the same theme. Where you miss a question, go back to the map and flashcards. The mind map Designed for sound off. Delight with sound on is a handy case for digital work, as it covers visual storytelling for mobile ads.

Digital and applied material

For online topics, look at YouTube advertising and Digital and Direct-Response Advertising. The quiz Digital Media Sales Exam Certification asks, among other things, what the D in DSP stands for. Flashcards such as Desires/Human Needs to which Ads Appeal & Target Audience help with audience thinking.

Where it fits

Advertising sits in the Branding and Marketing Communications strand of Marketing, advertising and sales. Pick one resource that matches what you are studying and start there, then make your own maps and flashcards to fill any gaps.

Frequently asked questions

Which quiz should I try first?

Persuasive Techniques in Advertising is a good opening. It shows a line from an advert and asks which technique it uses, so you practise spotting persuasion straight away. If you prefer planning topics, Lecture 7: Media Planning is a natural next step.

What do the mind maps cover?

There are over 300 mind maps. They range from Methods of Advertising and Types of Print Media to Creative Strategies, Copy Writing Strategies, YouTube advertising and How Advergaming Works. Some break down individual adverts or companies, so you can see ideas applied.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource on this page is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users rather than by GoConqr, so styles and depth vary. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own material.

Who is this page for?

It suits university students, school students and teachers. Around half the resources are at university level and a large share are at secondary level, so you can find lecture-based quizzes as well as simpler flashcards on techniques and slogans.

Are there flashcards for learning slogans and terms?

Yes. The Advertising slogan flash cards cover lines such as Just Do It and Think Different, while Media Terminology helps with the vocabulary of media work. Foundations of Advertising and Persuasion in Advertising are good for core ideas.

What if I can't find the topic I need?

Try nearby titles first, since topics overlap. Media topics appear in Media Buying & Planning and Placement of ads in media, for example. If nothing fits, you can build your own quiz, mind map or flashcards with a free account.
