About Decision Making and Problem Solving

GoConqr Original

What this page covers

The resources look at how decisions are made and how problems get solved in organisations. Theory comes first: the mind map on Ch.7 Decision Making and Creativity sets out the rational choice paradigm, and there are flashcard decks on the Rational Choice Model and the Bounded Rational Model. Other maps cover types of decisions, decision trees, risk and uncertainty, and ethics in managerial decision making.

Biases and thinking styles

Several resources look at why decisions go wrong. The mind map The Hidden Traps in Decision Making covers the anchoring trap, which gives too much weight to the first information we receive, and the status quo trap, which favours keeping things as they are. The flashcards on problems with info processing explain how people favour an implicit favourite. Intuition and making choices looks at gut feeling, and the map on lateral and creative thinking covers metaphors for thinking outside the box.

Techniques and numbers

For the quantitative side, try the maps on Relevant Costing, Special Order Request, Sales Forecasting and Investment appraisal 3.3.2. Relevant Costing explains that a joint product should be processed further only if the extra sales revenue exceeds the relevant further processing costs. Some resources are tied to A-level Business and GCSE Business, such as the 3.3 Decision Making Techniques maps and keyword decks.

Where to start

  1. Read a overview map such as Decision-Making Model or Types of decisions.
  2. Move to the flashcards, for example the PBA Lecture 6 deck on the steps of the decision-making process.
  3. Take a quiz, such as Decision Making, and note what you missed.
  4. Go back to the maps for those gaps, then look at group decisions in OWT 222 Group Decision Making.

Where it fits

This unit sits within the strand Principles and Theory of Management, in Business administration and management (incl. project management). Open a map or deck that matches what you are studying, and adapt it into your own revision set.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I start with?

Start with an overview mind map such as Decision-Making Model or Types of decisions, then use the PBA Lecture 6 flashcards to learn the steps. When you feel ready, try the quiz called Decision Making and see which topics need another look.

What do the mind maps cover?

There are over 200 mind maps. They cover the rational choice paradigm, decision trees, risk and uncertainty, ethics, group decision making, relevant costing and common decision traps such as anchoring and the status quo. Some also look at creative and lateral thinking for solving problems.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you create your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.

Which levels and exams do these resources suit?

Most of the material is aimed at university students and professional candidates, with a smaller share for school students. Some resources mention A-level Business and GCSE Business, such as the keyword decks for topics 3.3 and 3.4. Teachers can use any of it as ready-made material.

Is there anything on decision trees?

Yes. There are several mind maps on decision trees, including one on their advantages, plus flashcards titled What are decision trees? and Decision Tree pro and cons. Together they cover what decision trees are and where they help or fall short.

What if I cannot find the topic I need?

Try a nearby topic, such as risk and uncertainty or decision-making techniques, as titles vary between contributors. If something is still missing, you can make your own mind map, flashcards or notes with a free account and build exactly the set you need.
