About Manufacturing Processes and Production

GoConqr Original

What this unit covers

This unit sits in the Manufacturing and Making strand of Design and technology. It brings together how products are made, from single items to mass production. Most of what you will find is mind maps and flashcards, with a smaller set of quizzes, notes and flowcharts.

Processes to start with

For plastics, begin with the Injection Moulding mind map. It explains that the process uses pressure to force thermoplastic into a mould, and that complex shapes can be produced. Then move to Vacuum Forming, which lists the materials used, the products made, and the limits of the method. The Blow Moulding and Casting maps follow naturally. For ceramics, the Ceramics mind map splits processes into cutting from solid, sheet, and thin and hollow forms.

Systems, scale and digital tools

Once you know the processes, look at how they are organised. The Scale of Production maps cover one-off, batch and larger runs. The CAD CAM flashcards ask you to explain the advantages and disadvantages of using CAD for virtual modelling. The Manufacturing/Production Flashcards deck covers automation and smart technology in manufacturing.

Revision and making plans

The Revision Flashcards GCSE DT deck covers material properties and terms such as COSHH and LCA. If you are planning a project, the flowcharts show how other students set out their making steps, including several for acrylic parts and the NEA manufacturing plan.

Using quizzes and maps together

  1. Read a mind map on one process.
  2. Go through the matching flashcards.
  3. Take the Manufacturing Quiz, which asks you to name the process, material and material category for a product.
  4. Return to any map where you slipped.

All of it was made by GoConqr users. Choose one process today and see how far the maps and cards take you.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with the Injection Moulding mind map, then the Vacuum Forming map. Both set out a process, its materials and its limits in a clear branching layout. When you feel ready, take the Manufacturing Quiz, which asks you to name the process, material and material category for a product.

What do the mind maps cover?

They cover processes such as injection moulding, vacuum forming, blow moulding, casting and ceramics, plus scale of production, manufacturing systems, quality systems and digital technology in design and manufacture. Some are tied to specific projects, such as the MP3 Amplifier Project and Motor Bracket.

Are these resources free?

Yes. Every resource on this page is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.

Which levels and exams do they suit?

Nearly all of the resources are secondary level, so they suit school students. Listed resources mention GCSE Design and Technology, GCSE Product Design, GCSE Engineering and A-level Design and Technology. Teachers can use them as ready-made material for lessons or revision.

What are the flowcharts for?

The flowcharts show how students plan the making of a project, step by step. Many cover acrylic parts of an artefact, and others include a work breakdown structure, the NEA manufacturing plan and making a hexagon cajon. They are useful models when planning your own.

What if I can't find my topic?

Try the metal manufacturing flashcards, the glass processes map, the notes on elastomers, thermoforming and line bending, or the Thermoplastic map. If a topic is still missing, you can build your own mind map or flashcard deck with a free account.
