About Design Projects and Coursework

GoConqr Original

What this unit covers

This page collects design project and coursework planning from the Design Process strand of Design and technology. Most of it is mind maps, each one a student's plan for a real project. Topics include a pop-up book, a shoe rack, a birdhouse build, an internet radio station and a charger caddy.

What the project maps show

The DT GCSE NEA 2024 map shows early idea sorting: educational toys and games, electronics, microcontrollers and maths game ideas, each with honest comments on how appealing it is. The POP-UP BOOK map breaks a project into material, purpose, ergonomics, target market, theme, aesthetics and health and safety. The SHOE RACK (R.M) map compares hardwoods and softwoods, finishes such as stain and varnish, and the likely user.

The BIRDHOUSE BUILD map follows a project in order, from design and planning through tools, construction and exterior finishing to final inspection and delivery. The GCSE DT Project - Charger Caddy map covers cost, customer, safety and environment.

Where to start

  1. Open the Possible Project Ideas map to see how themes, cultures and countries can spark a topic.
  2. Read the several Controlled Assessment maps and the flowchart on the stages of the controlled assessment to see how the work is organised.
  3. Pick a product map close to your own idea, such as Task Light, Folding Table or Bike Rack Design.
  4. Use the CAD Commands flashcards and the Presentation drawing skills flashcards for the drawing side.

Using quizzes and maps together

Read a map first, then test yourself. The Sculptris test quiz checks a modelling skill, and the Graph com quiz offers a second short check. After each one, go back to the map and note what you missed. Teachers can set a map as a model for a class to compare with their own plans.

Make it your own

Choose one project map, then sketch your own version with headings that match your brief. Add flashcards for the terms you need to remember.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I start on this page?

Start with the DT GCSE NEA 2024 mind map to see how project ideas are sorted, then open the Possible Project Ideas map. After that, pick a product map close to your own idea, such as Task Light or Folding Table.

What do the mind maps cover?

Most are project plans. They look at material, purpose, target market, ergonomics, aesthetics, cost and safety. Examples include the pop-up book, shoe rack, birdhouse build, charger caddy and children's toy maps, plus several on controlled assessment.

Are there quizzes and flashcards?

Yes. There are more than 5 quizzes, including the Sculptris test and Graph com quiz, and 10 flashcard decks. Decks such as CAD Commands, Assembly and Finishing and Presentation drawing skills support the practical side of a project.

Which exams do these resources suit?

Almost all the resources are at secondary level. The listed resources mention GCSE Design and Technology and A-level Design and Technology, so they suit school students working on coursework at those stages, and teachers looking for examples.

Are the resources free, and who made them?

Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself, so each reflects one student's or teacher's approach to a project.

What if I can't find my project topic?

Try a related map. Light, Task Light and Low-Voltage Light cover lighting, while Coffee table and Folding Table cover furniture. You can also make your own mind map with a free account and keep it for later.
