About English for Specific Purposes

GoConqr Original

What the page covers

The page has two strands of material. The first is about ESP itself: what it is, how it developed and how courses are shaped. The second is specialist vocabulary, mostly legal and medical, with some technical English, aviation and hospitality.

The mind maps on ESP include Evolution of ESP, which starts from the demand for English after the Second World War, and THE DEVELOPMENT OF ESP, which looks at register analysis and making courses more relevant to learners' needs. Others cover types of ESP, needs analysis and the split between academic and occupational English.

Where to start

  1. Open the mind maps on the evolution and types of ESP to get the big picture.
  2. Move to NEEDS ANALYSIS to see how courses are planned around learners.
  3. Choose your field: law, medicine or technical English.

Legal English

Law is well represented. The flashcard deck Unit 1. The law has definitions such as compensation, guilty and judicial. The Test for Legal English quiz asks what law, rights, property and bankruptcy mean. Further maps cover Legal Language and Legal Writing. Several quizzes based on a UNED legal English course work through texts such as the judge's role in civil cases and prenuptial agreements.

Medical and technical English

For medicine, look at Flashcards Medicine, Medical Equipment and Medical Terminology A-L. For technical and workplace English, the Comprehension 1 quiz uses air traffic radio exchanges, and there are notes on cabin crew positions.

Using maps and quizzes together

Read a map first, then take a quiz on the same topic. Whatever you miss, turn into a flashcard and test yourself again a few days later. Teachers can set a map as pre-reading and a quiz as a quick check.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

If you are new to ESP, start with the mind map Evolution of ESP, then THE DEVELOPMENT OF ESP. If you want vocabulary straight away, try the Unit 1. The law flashcards or the Test for Legal English quiz, then move on to other fields.

What do the ESP mind maps cover?

They cover how ESP grew after the Second World War, register analysis, the types of ESP such as academic and occupational English, and needs analysis. There are over 370 mind maps on the page, many of them versions of the same topics, so you can compare them.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you create your own quizzes, maps, flashcards and notes.

Which fields does the vocabulary cover?

Mostly law and medicine. You will find legal flashcards, contract terms and company law quizzes, plus medical equipment, surgery and illness terms. There are also smaller sets on technical English, hotels, golf and cabin crew roles.

Who are these resources suited to?

Most are at university level, with some for professional candidates, so they suit university students and professionals working on specialist English. Teachers can use them as ready-made material. A few resources are simple enough for school students.

What if I cannot find my field?

Try the general maps on types of ESP and needs analysis, which help you decide what to study. Then build your own flashcards or quiz for your field, using the vocabulary decks here as a model.
