About Religion, Ethics and Conscience
GoConqr OriginalWhat this unit covers
The unit sits in the Ethics and Value Theory strand of Philosophy. Its resources look at how religion, morality and the conscience connect. Most are mind maps, with quizzes, flashcard decks, slide sets and notes alongside them.
- Ethical theories: Situation Ethics, Natural Law, Virtue Ethics and Divine Command Theory.
- Conscience: many maps, including Christian Views on Conscience and Secular Views on Conscience, plus a Conscience quiz and flashcards.
- Applied topics: Euthanasia, Pacifism, Sexual Ethics, Environmental Ethics and the notes on sexual consent.
Where to start
Begin with the Situation Ethics mind map. It sets out Fletcher's idea of agape, unconditional love, and explains why he saw absolute rules as too demanding. Then open the mind map Situation Ethics is not compatible with Christian Ethics, which argues the other side. Next, read the Christian Ethics map to see the sources of moral authority, such as the Bible, the church and conscience.
Working on conscience
The Conscience quiz asks why we have a conscience and where it comes from. The flashcards ask about Aquinas, Augustine, vincible and invincible ignorance, and terms such as the id and the super-ego. Read one of the Conscience mind maps first, then test yourself on the cards.
Using maps and quizzes together
- Read a mind map slowly and cover each branch in turn.
- Take the matching quiz without notes.
- Note which answers you missed and go back to those branches.
- Use flashcards for short definitions and key philosophers.
For application topics, the sexual ethics decks look at the subject through Utilitarianism, Virtue Ethics and Kant, which is useful for comparing theories. Teachers can pick a map or slide set to open a lesson, then set a quiz to close it.
Make it your own
Choose one theory you find hard, work through its map and quiz, and then try summarising it in a map or deck of your own.
Frequently asked questions
Which resource should I open first?
Start with the Situation Ethics mind map. It covers Fletcher, agape and the idea that each situation is different. Then read Christian Ethics to see how it compares with other sources of moral authority. After that, the Conscience quiz is a good check on what you have absorbed.
What do the mind maps cover?
There are over 130 mind maps. They cover Situation Ethics, Natural Law, Virtue Ethics, Christian Ethics and several on Conscience. Others look at Sexual Ethics, Euthanasia, Pacifism, free will and determinism, and the relationship between religion and morality, including critiques of that link.
Which exams are these resources suited to?
Almost all the resources are at secondary level. The listed resources mention A-level Religious Studies, GCSE Religious Studies and A-level Philosophy. Check each resource against your own course, since they were made by GoConqr users and may follow different specifications.
Are the resources free, and who made them?
Yes. Every resource here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.
Are there quizzes on specific theories?
Yes. Over 20 quizzes include Conscience, Divine Command Theory, Natural law, Christian ethics, Virtue Ethics, Meta Ethics and Environmental Ethics. There is also a quiz on applying ethics to theft, so you can test theory against a practical case.
What if I can't find the topic I need?
Try nearby titles. Abortion, for example, appears in a medical ethics mind map and in a slide set on what different ethical theories say about it. If nothing fits, you can make your own mind map, flashcards or notes and build the topic yourself.
