About Stalin's USSR
GoConqr OriginalWhat this unit covers
The unit follows the Soviet Union from Lenin's last years to Stalin's rule. Early items deal with the Bolsheviks and the New Economic Policy. The mind map Stalin's Economic Policies asks why Stalin ended the NEP, noting that it had helped the economy recover from war before growth slowed. Others cover the leadership struggle of 1924-29, Trotsky's strengths and Stalin's political and personal ability.
Where to start
Begin with the overview map Russia 1917-91: Lenin to Yeltsin. It sets out the themes: communist government, industrial and agricultural change, control of the people and social developments. Then move to Stalin's Rise To Power!, which explains how he held the posts of General Secretary, and sat on the Orgburo, Secretariat and Politburo.
Next, work through this order:
- The power struggle, using the mind maps and the notes on Lenin's Testament.
- The economy: NEP New Economic Policy, Collectivisation and FIVE YEAR PLANS 1928-41.
- Control and terror: The Great Terror, The Purges and The Moscow Show Trials 1936-38.
- Daily life: Life in communist Russia 1930's, plus the notes on women and on religion and communal housing.
Using quizzes and maps together
Read a mind map first, then test yourself. Stalin and the Five year plans checks the ideas behind industrialisation, including what the NEP favoured. Stalin's Russia asks what totalitarian means, what a cult of personality is and who was sent to the gulags during the Great Purge. Note what you miss, go back to the map, then try again.
Flashcard decks suit short sessions. Some are labelled for GCSE or AQA, and the resources mention GCSE History, A-level History and Edexcel A-level History. Teachers can use the maps and slides, such as Stalin's Russia 1930s, as ready-made starting points.
Where it fits
This unit sits in the strand The World Wars and the Interwar Era (1900-1945) within History. Everything here was made by GoConqr users, so compare items and check them against your own course notes.
Choose one topic from the list above, open its map and then take the matching quiz.
Frequently asked questions
Which resource should I open first?
Start with the mind map Russia 1917-91: Lenin to Yeltsin for the big picture. It lists the main themes, from communist government to social developments. After that, move to Stalin's Rise To Power! and then to the economic maps, so each topic builds on the last.
What do the quizzes test?
There are more than 20 quizzes. Stalin and the Five year plans covers causes and the NEP. Stalin's Russia asks about totalitarianism, the cult of personality and the gulags. Others focus on the purges and terror, work, welfare, and the change from War Communism to the NEP.
Which exams are these resources linked to?
The listed resources mention GCSE History, A-level History and Edexcel A-level History. Nearly all are at secondary level, so they suit school students. Some flashcard decks name AQA sections too. Always check your own specification, since the resources were made by community members.
Are the resources free to use?
Yes. Every resource here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.
Is there anything on life under Stalin, not just politics?
Yes. Life in communist Russia 1930's looks at people moving to cities and at religion. There are notes on women under Lenin and Stalin, plus flashcard decks on industry, working conditions, and health and housing.
What if I can't find the topic I need?
Try nearby titles first. Topics often appear under different names, such as The Purges, The Great Terror and Key phases of the Terror. If a gap remains, you can build your own map, flashcards or notes and use them alongside the community material.
