The Cell

109 resources created by 105 users

This The Cell page on GoConqr gathers community-made quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes on cell structure and function, from organelles and the plasma membrane to the cytoskeleton, cell junctions and stem cells. It's built for university students revising a topic and teachers after ready-made material. There are over 100 resources here, including more than 20 quizzes, over 20 mind maps and over 50 flashcard decks, made by over 100 contributors. Pick a deck, try a quiz to find your gaps, then build your own.

About The Cell

GoConqr Original

What the resources cover

This unit gathers material on the basic parts of a cell and how they work. Several flashcard decks list the main regions of a cell, such as the nucleus, cytoplasm and plasma membrane, and then move on to organelles like ribosomes and the rough endoplasmic reticulum. The Cell: Anatomy and Division is a good example, starting with a plain definition of a cell and moving to the nucleus and chromatin.

The cytoskeleton gets plenty of space. The Cytoskeleton mind map covers microtubules, their hollow structure, tubulin subunits and their role in cell shape, movement and division. Advanced Cell Biology goes further, with actin filaments, intermediate filaments and cell migration.

Where to start

  1. Open a general deck such as Cell Structure Flashcards or Introduction to cells to get the vocabulary in place.
  2. Look at a map such as Cells and Organelles or Parts of the Cell to see how the parts connect.
  3. Try a quiz. TAAP002 - TAFE asks which organelle is the power plant of a cell, and Cell Lecture 3 includes label-the-image questions on the plasma membrane and lipid bilayer.

Using quizzes and maps together

Take a quiz first and note what you got wrong. Then open the matching mind map and read only that branch. For example, if membrane questions trip you up, look at Cell (plasma) Membrane or Functions of Cell Plasma Membranes. Return to the quiz afterwards and see what has changed.

Other topics here reach beyond the basic cell: Cell junctions, adhesion and ECM, Cilia and Flagella, Cell Biology: Apoptosis and the stem cell quiz Stem cell, ageing and cancer. Teachers can pick a set that fits a class and share it as it is.

Where it sits

The Cell belongs to the strand Foundations of Anatomy in the subject Anatomy. It is a natural base before the tissue and organ topics that follow.

Choose one resource that matches what you are studying today, and open it. When you are ready, put together your own set of maps and flashcards from what you have found.

Frequently asked questions

Which quiz should I try first?

Start with TAAP002 - TAFE if you want a quick check on organelles, such as which one provides ATP. If you prefer something on membranes, Cell Lecture 3 has label-the-image questions and asks about the most common phospholipid in cell membranes.

What do the mind maps cover?

The mind maps cover the cytoskeleton, organelles, the plasma membrane, the Golgi apparatus, cell junctions, cilia and flagella, apoptosis and stem cells. There are also general maps with titles such as Cells and Organelles and Parts of the Cell, which suit a first read.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource on this page is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself, so styles and depth vary from one to the next.

Who are these resources for?

They are mostly aimed at university students who want to revise cell structure and function, with a few at school level. Teachers can also use them as ready-made material for lessons or revision tasks.

What if the topic I need is missing?

Look through the related decks and maps first, as a topic often sits inside a broader set, such as the cytoplasm or generalised cell decks. If it is still absent, a free account lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.

Is there something on cell division?

Yes. The deck The Cell: Anatomy and Division covers cell definitions, the nucleus and chromatin, and Danica Anatomy Midterm Quiz - The Cell & Cell Division tests the same area. The Cytoskeleton mind map also links microtubules to cell division.
